Gift of the Givers is the largest disaster response NGO of African origin on the African continent. It was established on the instruction of a Sufi Sheik, Muhammed Saffer Effendi al Jerrahi (a spiritual teacher), on 6 August 1992 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Since inception, Gift of the Givers has delivered lifesaving aid to the value of R2.1 billion in the form of search and rescue teams, medical personnel, medical equipment, medical supplies, medicines, vaccines, anti-malarial medication, high energy and protein supplements, food and water to millions of people in 43 countries, including South Africa.
Gift of the Givers has a simple but powerful motto – “Best Among People are those who Benefit Mankind” – and accordingly, it serves ALL people irrespective of race, religion, culture, colour, political affiliation or geographical location, unconditionally.
Commencing as a disaster response agency, the organisation now has 21 categories of projects which include bursaries, agricultural self-sustainability, water provision, counselling and life skills services, entrepreneurship and job creation, establishment of primary health care clinics and medical support to hospitals, winter warmth and supply of new clothing and shoes, sports development, feeding schemes and food parcel distribution, supply of household and personal hygiene packs, educational support and toy distribution, provision of housing, and care of the physically and mentally challenged, orphans and the elderly.
Gift of the Givers has designed and developed the world’s first and only containerised mobile hospital comprising 28 units, the world’s first containerised primary health care unit, and the world’s first groundnut-soya high energy and protein supplement, called Sibusiso Food Supplement, which is used in cases of severe malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, TB, cancer and other debilitating conditions.
In 2006, Gift of the Givers established Africa’s largest open source computer lab at Northbury Park Secondary School in Pietermaritzburg, while it has also created Careline, a telephonic and face-to-face counselling service (0800 786 786 Toll-free in South Africa).
These achievements have earned Gift of the Givers 125 local and international awards, citations, commendations and special recognitions, including four Presidential awards, and its activities continue to receive extensive media coverage, both locally and internationally.
Gift of the Givers is entirely neutral in its approach to people in need, is non-judgemental and has an open-minded approach to all situations. It works with governments to get assistance delivered, but does not align itself politically to any party. It has an excellent partnership relationship with the South African Government for the implementation of its local projects, and delivery of foreign aid.
